New thermal traffic sensor successfully distinguishes bikes from other vehicles, day and night, and in all weather conditions.
At this year’s ITS World Congress in Tokyo, Japan, FLIR Intelligent Transportation Systems, the ITS business unit of FLIR Systems, will be announcing the launch of TrafiSense, an integrated thermal camera and detector for vehicle and bike presence detection and counting at signalized intersections. TrafiSense detects vehicles and bicycles at and near the stop bar based on thermal video images, allowing traffic lights to be controlled dynamically.
TrafiSense is based on FLIR’s vast experience with integrated solutions that combine a traffic camera and video analytics for traffic applications. FLIR’s TrafiSense sensor has the same housing as the well-know TrafiCam and TrafiCam x-stream video sensors that have been installed all over the world. The main difference between TrafiSense and TrafiCam is the camera core: TrafiSense uses a thermal imaging camera instead of a ‘traditional’ visible camera. The intelligent TrafiSense sensor will transmit its detection information over contact closures or over IP to the traffic light controller and will thus allow a more dynamic control of traffic lights.
